The magicians at Koenji Beer Workshop have done it again. Their sister bar, Beer Dojo Asagaya 阿佐谷麦酒道場, opened in July 2012 and is a welcome expansion of the owner’s brewing skills and Tokyo’s craft beer scene. A 5-minute walk from Asagaya Station 阿佐ヶ谷駅, this brew-pub is easily accessible via the Chuo line and makes a logical stop on any pub crawl to Tokyo’s western suburbs.

My wandering feet led me from Koenji to this fortuitous beer encounter. I first ordered their “October 3” and, was easily convinced by the bartender to take the “October 2” with me as I continued my walk westward. Like Koenji Beer Workshop (see prior post), the beers at Beer Dojo Asagaya are brewed on-location, and appear to rotate frequently. The first floor is for drinking, while the second floor has a restaurant with classic bar foods like chicken kaarage and pizza.

The owner, who was at the bar during my visit, treats his customers like family, and makes good beer to boot. I’m looking forward to more visits, and hopefully the expansion of Koenji Beer Workshop will inspire more Tokyo’s burgeoning brewpub scene.
