Pedestrian bridge in Kawaguchi (provisional spaces)

I’ve periodically remarked on the joys of what I refer to as provisional spaces in Tokyo and beyond; these are features such as bridges, paths, and other structures that don’t quite seem permanent or don’t quite seem to fit in the modern cityscape, yet persist due to their utility, cost-effectiveness, or other reasons. These are spaces that feel unpolished.

Here’s an example: a small pedestrian-only bridge in Kawaguchi, just north of Tokyo (map).

Other terms I’ve seen for provisional spaces, include “practical urbanism“, “temporary urbanism“, and “meanwhile spaces“. The meaning and application of these terms can be somewhat different from what I refer to as provisional spaces.

For instance, the term “meanwhile spaces” may refer to the use of an abandoned lot as a park or meeting space and can be considered more clearly temporary in nature; from the start this space can be expected to be replaced at potentially any moment. In contrast, the bridge shown above likely has no intended end date and can theoretically be used for decades.
